This resource is part of an ongoing project to highlight “bright spot” schools that are effectively serving diverse learners. These stories celebrate how diverse learning communities can thrive together and provide specific, actionable, and inspiring suggestions for promoting and sustaining safe and supportive learning environments, high expectations, and academic excellence for all students.

How did you select the schools featured in this series, and what specifically made them stand out as “bright spots”?

Schools and districts were selected based on information provided in nomination forms that were filled out by individuals who believed these settings were exemplars that demonstrated environments serving pluralistic populations as dynamic, rigorous, and rich places of learning for students.

As you interviewed each school, did you notice any similarities or common themes about each site’s approach to supporting their diverse learners?

Commonalities across schools and districts include authentic, meaningful engagement of parents as a part of their children’s learning experiences. Additionally, districts and schools provided varied communication supports to ensure all families have access to information in their native language whether it is through written communication or meetings that require interpreters.

As educators look ahead to a new school year, what are 1–2 key lessons from these “bright spot” schools they could realistically apply in their own contexts?

One key lesson that schools and districts can apply is to expand what it means to authentically engagement families as a part of their child’s education and think of ways to invite parents into the educational environment to better understand and be involved their children’s educational experience.

Input Needed: Safe and Connected Learning Communities

We’re inviting educators and education leaders to complete a brief survey about safety, belonging, and connection in schools and communities. Share key challenges, strategies that are working, current partnerships, and the resources you need—your input will help shape a practical resource for districts and schools.
